SCI012 - Mav - Sounds of the Deep LP - Pre Sampler 1

SCI012 - Mav – Sounds of the Deep LP – Pre-Sampler Part 1
“Between Heaven and the Deep Blue Sea” / “Orbiting the Earth” [Scientific Records]

A hefty portion of solid broken beats delivered in two forms – a sharp yet tranquil cosmic stepper on the one hand and a deep, contemplative dreamer on the other.

Mav’s Scientific Records has always been about quality over quantity, so the fact that you don’t see much of ‘Sci’ stuff on the digital of physical shelves of your favorite music stores should not surprise you. However, the label is well-alive and kickin’ and with 2013 you can expect some big things from its honcho, as his long-awaited album is about to see the daylight soon, including remixes from established artists such as Chris.SU, Seba, Bungle, Future Engineers, Paul SG and Naibu.

With SCI012, the first of two album pre-samplers, it is the time for Mav’s own stuff focusing on what he does best – quick-paced, spacious, sci-fi-flavoured atmospheric drum & bass. It’s a rare thing to see any of the more ‘old-school heads’ sticking to one’s guns despite the changing trends on the market, but it seems that in the case of Mav, his music can still be as exciting as it used to be in the times of the amazing bloom of techmospheric d’n’b. Starting off with the mesmerizing “Between Heaven and the Deep Blue Sea”, expect to be taken away by a blast of quick-paced broken beats growing stronger with each phrase just to ease off unexpectedly and strike again accompanied by oneiric vocal samples and heavenly pads to contrast the otherwise ‘stern’ atmosphere. The ‘flipside’ – “Orbiting the Earth” – is for all the space travelers out there – the track meanders upon layers of hypnotizing soundscapes of deep subs, rough syncopated drums and recurring series of harmonious samples. What more could you ask for when facing a perspective of a thrilling musical voyage into space like this? Sit back, buckle up and float swiftly like a satellite to the guiding rhythm of captivating broken drums…
