about

Welcome to Naibu's Case Study. A study on music as a form: can it be both compromising and uncompromising at the same time ?
And music as a function: what happens when you remove music from its original context and when it is void of any function ? Is it still relevant ? Are you ?
Many great questions which most certainly won't be answered by this record.

The study will start on a deep personal level and will be carried out until the bigger picture reveals itself. It will take you through many interesting places, like Japan.

This is not a Drum & Bass album, yet it should have been.

Please enjoy this Drum & Bass album.

On a less serious note:

Robin Leclair aka Naibu has been making waves in the d’n’b industry for almost ten years now, becoming known for his complex drum patterns, gentle, ‘organic’ melodies, very intense and moody backgrounds, and powerful basslines, bridging the wide gap between drumfunk, liquid funk, and atmospheric drum & bass. But his unique take on music lets him easily avoid being pigeonholed, showing that he’s an artist capable of making his sound act not only on our ears, but also on our imagination, provoking vivid images, letting the listener visit places they’ve never been before. Indeed, his music is truly visual, which makes him surely an interesting case to study. And speaking of case studies, this is to announce that his newest long-play album entitled ‘Case Study’ has just been released on Mav’s Scientific Records, and comes both on vinyl and in digital format (with one bonus track – Orphan – in the case of the latter). But coming straight to the point, what you can expect of Naibu’s recent work is even further exploration of the mixture of the aural and the visual, leaning definitely more towards the ‘home-listening’ area than the dancefloor. ‘Case Study’ is like a storybook, a handcrafted album painted with great attention to detail, with lots of nuances making the created soundscapes truly lifelike and ethereal at the same time. And getting down to the nitty-gritty, be prepared to be taken on a journey abounding with Naibu’s trademark crisp-beated sexy d’n’b rollers (Astray), tribal and exotic excursions around the tempo of 170 BPM (Fighting for Attention), expeditions into ambient territories (5 Pieces, written with the one and only Makoto), classic subtle choppage (Straight (Into the Wall)), and many hybrid halftempo pieces (Clouds – featuring Key, Turn me Down, Key to Change)! The album has been 100% recorded and performed in the studio, featuring a large variety of live instruments. This way, he proves once more to be a skillful craftsman who knows his trade, offering you yet again a superb listening experience.
